The Vacation Rental Scene.
As you would expect, there is an enormous variety in price, location and amenities of Outer Banks rental cottages. Locations span across the islands, from the ocean to the sound and everywhere in between... More.

With literally thousands of homes to choose from, ranging from two-bedroom cozy cottages on the sound to average-size (and priced) houses between the highways to palatial structures with 10 or more bedrooms on the oceanfront, the only hard time you'll have is choosing which one you like best.

Many of the houses have every amenity you could imagine needing or wanting – media rooms, several master suites, pools, hot tubs, gourmet kitchens, game rooms, fitness centers or home gyms, fireplaces, internet access…you name it! And with some rentals, you are granted privileges at local golf courses or the YMCA. With most rentals houses, the package is so complete that all you need to bring are your personal belongings.

Since the Outer Banks now has a huge number of large homes readily available, many of them are rented for weddings (usually requiring a special contract), family reunions, corporate retreats or other gatherings. The trend in Outer Banks vacationing is for several families to rent a large home together, splitting the cost of the house and all staying under one roof. Some families prefer to rent neighboring homes. Availability ranges from a weekend stay in the off season to an extended vacation, but most people come for a week or two. Price depends on size, the proximity to the water and the season. For late summer and fall rentals, the managing rental company will typically offer you the option of hurricane insurance for renters. It doesn't cost much, and if you purchase it you won't lose a deposit or be out any money if a hurricane threatens during your rental week.

The rental process is made easy by many professional property management companies that take care of everything from deposits and contracts to cleaning and maintenance. You can find information on all of these rental companies on all of these rental companies on this site.

When you need more space or want more amenities than you'd find in a motel room, these vacation homes are the way to go. But do make your plans early. Summer on the Outer Banks is a very popular time, and even with the plethora of vacation homes available, you want to get your dibs in early in the year to be assured of getting one of your top choices.
