Boat & Captain:

The Hooker

"The Hooker" is a fifty-foot custom Carolina boat built by Billy Holton. In 2008 extensive improvements were made to the boat. The engine room had a major makeover and she was re-powered with a new 1150 horsepower Caterpillar C 18 Acert engine. She comes equipped with heating to keep you warm during those winter months of tuna and striper fishing and air conditioning to keep you cool during the hot days of summer. The salon also hosts a microwave and a stereo with a compact disc player. She comes fully rigged with the latest in electronics and all the tackle you'll need for a great day of gulf stream fishing.

Captain Tom Krauss

Your Captain, Tom Krauss, has been fishing out of Oregon Inlet for over 30 years and is one of the most respected captains in the business. Tom has been married to his wife, Janice, for over 21 years and has two daughters, Kristen and Kelly. Capt. Tom likes to go fishing even when he gets a day off, so you know he's going to do everything he can to put you "in the bite". Down in the cockpit, your mate, Greg Feeley, has all the knowledge and skills to make your day a success. From rigging the baits to hooking the big one, Greg will help make your day aboard "The Hooker" one you'll never forget.

Fish We Catch:

Stripers

January-February - Striper fishing is in full swing by January and it's been nothing short of phenomenal in recent years. These fish range from twenty to fifty pounds and it's not uncommon to be battling more than one on the same rod at the same time. Sound crazy? Come charter "The Hooker" and find out what world class striper fishing is all about. Our salon is heated so don't worry about the cold-just come ready to catch fish. Usually a half-day trip is all you need to catch all the stripers you can handle, but if a full day of fishing is what you need to put away the winter blues, we can handle that too.

Big Eye Tuna

June-July - Dolphins are showing up in force by now and the tunas are still around as well. This is a great time to try your luck battling a hundred pound (or much bigger) Big Eye Tuna. These are real bruisers so be ready for the fight of a lifetime. Never caught a billfish? Blue Marlin, White Marlin and Sailfish start frequenting our waters during this time so come charter "The Hooker" to fulfill your life's dream.

Marlin

August-September - Book your charter now on "The Hooker" to get in on the hottest white marlin bite on the east coast. This is usually prime time White Marlin fishing and double digit releases are a real possibility. The full August moon means the big blues are lurking in our off-shore waters-try your shot at hooking a grander! Also, the dolphin are still around and by the end of September, yellowfin tuna should be back in force.

Yellowfin Tuna

October-December - Yellowfin tuna fishing is going strong now-if conditions are right you'll be chunking instead of trolling. If you've never done this kind of fishing before it's a must. It's non stop action that will leave you begging for mercy! By the middle of November striper fishing is starting up again and life is good! What could be better than year round fishing on the Outer Banks!

Fishing Report:

Tuna

Tue, May 15th 2012 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Here's a picture of Sunday's catch-lots of tuna!

World Class Fishing

Tue, May 15th 2012 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Unbelievable fishing right now. Limits of tuna the last three days, plus plenty of dolphin and a sailfish yesterday. This is the best fishing we've had in a while. We were booked to go today but got blown out-no good.

Really good fishing

Tue, May 8th 2012 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Really great fishing the last couple of days for the guys that went. Limits of tuna and lots of gaffer dolphin. We have Thursday and Friday open if anyone wants to go. 252-473-1964

Tuna!

Wed, May 2nd 2012 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

We started off slow yesterday-only two little dolphin by lunch. But at 3pm we had a box full of tuna and headed home! Really good fishing once we found them. We had Trip and his friends/family with us-he gets married on Friday and we wish him and Josie the best of luck!

Back in the Water!

Sat, April 21st 2012 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

We went back in the water this week after being in the boatyard for some spring maintenance. Yesterday it was a good day of tuna fishing for us and today it was wahoo and dolphin. The season is here it's time to go fishing!

Lots fo tuna!

Tue, March 27th 2012 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Great tuna fishing over the weekend. We had our limit of yellowfins early, the fish box was full so we headed on in. I think we are hauling out tomorrow for just a few days of spring boatwork and then will be back in the water by early next week, ready to go for the season. Give us a call to book your trip-plenty of open dates but if the fishing stays this good, they will book up fast.

Great tuna fishing!

Thu, March 8th 2012 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Really good fishing yesterday and today. Yesterday we had a limit of yellowfins, plenty of bluefins (we had to release most of them) a few dolphin and a mako shark! Today was another limit of yellowfins and back at the dock early-it doesn't get any better than that for early March. Give us a call and let's go fishing!

Great Fishing!

Thu, February 2nd 2012 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

We had great fishing over this past weekend. A limit of yellowfin, one mako shark and a 250 pound bluefin! That's about as good as it gets. We've been back out twice this week and we've broken off two bluefins. Going again on Saturday and then we have plenty of open days. We need to phone to start ringing!!

Bluefins

Sat, January 14th 2012 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

I haven't written much lately because unfortunately we haven't been fishing much. However, When we have gone it's been really good tuna fishing. Earlier, we had great yellowfin fishing but right now there is incredible bluefin tuna fishing. This past week we caught around a 300 pounder and lost one that was bigger than that! World Class!

Beautiful weekend

Mon, November 21st 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Beautiful weather and great fishing the last two days. Limits of yellowfins and calm seas-what could be better? I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving and fyi-we are open this weekend if anyone wants to get in on this yellowfin action.

Lots of tuna

Mon, November 14th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

We finally had a nice weekend and there was good tuna fishing for the boats that went. Everyone had limits of yellowfin on Sunday.

Lots of Wind

Mon, November 7th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

I wish I had something to report but the wind has been blowing forever. We've had 5 trips canceled over the last two weekends because it's just been blowing too hard. It's very early in the season for this much wind-I hope it's not a sign of things to come this winter.

Box full!

Fri, October 7th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Lots of tuna in the ocean today. They were jumping all around the boat and in the baits but they didn't want to bite. We did end up with 12-a couple of them over 70 pounds! Add about 40 dolphin and that's a box full of fish. Looks like we are going to have a great tuna fishing-call if you want to go.

Decent fishing

Fri, September 30th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Pretty good tuna fishing yesterday for us but not as read hot as it had been for the last couple of days. Earlier in the week, boats were back to the dock by 1:00 with a box full of tuna. Yesterday we ended up with 9 yellowfins which I'll take any day.

Tuna!

Mon, September 26th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Really good tuna fishing for the guys on Friday-a box full of yellowfins and a few blackfins thrown in. It's getting to be that time of year-we have plenty of open dates if you are ready for tuna! On Saturday our party wanted to go marlin fishing and we ended up with two whites-that's probably the last time we'll go marlin fishing this year-it's all about tuna now.

Another good day

Fri, September 23rd 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Another good day of marlin fishing for us yesterday. We had Ross Darling and his father on board and they went 8 for 8 on whites! The day before was not as good as we only caught one white but lots of dolphin. Today, Tom is switching gears a little and going tuna fishing-that was really good yesterday for the boats that tried it. I'll let you know how they do.

Tuna!

Thu, September 15th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

You never know what is going to happen when you go fishing. We've been pretty much focusing on white marlin recently but on Wednesday we had two guys from Charleston that wanted to catch a tuna. I didn't think we would do much but man was I wrong. We ended up with a box full of yellowfins, a few dolphin, we released a sail, relased a 350 pound blue marlin and lost a white-almost a grand slam!!! A great day of fishing and a great couple of guys-really enjoyed the day.

Overnighter

Wed, September 14th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Here's another picture from our overnight trip on Sept. 10th and 11th. The flags are too close together to count but there are 25 plus a US flag on the other side-never forget.

World Class!

Wed, September 14th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

We had an overnight trip last weekend and wow-what a great time. The weather was beautiful and we ended up catching 25 white marlin over two days and one sword fish while we fished that night. We also hooked another swordfish-about 200 pounds-but we lost him after about 15 minutes. Unbelievable fishing right now-world class!!

Marlins, marlins and more marlins

Mon, September 5th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Wow, what a day yesterday! Marlins, marlins and more marlins. I'm not really sure exactlly how many we saw but we ended up releasing 10 whites plus about 30 gaffers. We also lost a blue in between. Saturday was fairly good with a limit of dophin and 2 whites. I think regular wind and the swell from the hurricane is going to stop us from fishing this week but we have several open days next week!

Yesterday’s report

Wed, August 31st 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Not the best of days for us yesterday. We had a lot of small dolphin bites but that was about it. Only two boats fished yesterday so there wasn't a lot of coverage. A lot more of the fleet is going today so hopefully we'll find something.

Hurricane update

Tue, August 30th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

I just wanted to give everyone an update after the hurricane. We made it through fine although downtown Manteo had a lot of flooding. The sound water came up as high as it's been in a long, long time. Also, the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center got severely damaged and "The Hooker" is now docked at Pirates Cove. We are not sure when the fishing center will be back open. Tom is out fishing today and I'll give a report tomorrow.

Marlins and Hurricanes

Fri, August 26th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

We went fun fishing on Wednesday and caught 6 whites. We had three more that pulled off and another 3 that wouldn't bite. Really good fishing. Since then we have been getting ready for the hurricane and "The Hooker" is hauled out-up on dry land. We are staying put and hoping things won't be too bad. We'll let you know after the storm passes.

Marlins!

Mon, August 22nd 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Marlin fishing is fantastic right now. We caught 8 yesterday and saw several more that we didn't get. Other boats had good days as well. The weather looks beautiful this week and we have several open days so give me a call and let's go get them!!!

Pirate’s Cove Tournament

Sun, August 21st 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

We fished in the Pirate's Cove Tournament last week and had a good showing but couldn't quite stay at the top of the leaderboard. We wond a daily on Wednesday after catching 7 whites and we were tied for first place with a total of 9. Then on Thursday we only caught 3 and that put us out of the lead and eventually, just out of the top 10. A great time though and a big thanks to Dave Morris and his crew for fishing with us.

Great week of fishing!

Sat, August 13th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Fishing has been pretty good this week. We had our limit of tuna by 9:30 one morning then caught a few gaffers plus 2 white marlin. The next day we caught dolphin plus more marlin. Then the last two days we caught about 4 whites each day. On Thursday we also caught a sail and then had a blue marlin in the spread but couldn't get him to bite-that would have been our grand slam!

Monday’s report

Tue, August 9th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

On Monday we had a limit of dolphin plus 2 white marlin. The boats that were down south hit the tunas pretty good but we were out of position to try them. We might head that way today.

Monday’s report

Tue, August 9th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

On Monday we had a limit of dolphin plus 2 white marlin. The boats that were down south hit the tunas pretty good but we were out of position to try them. We might head that way today.

Marllins!

Wed, August 3rd 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Pretty good fishing for us the last couple of days. On Monday we had 4 whites plus a limit of dophin. We also saw several more whites and broke off a blue. Bummer. Tuesday we caught 4 whites, 1 sail and around a dozen dolphin-one was around 25 pounds. It's supposed to blow tomorrow but we'll be back out there for the weekend.

Update

Sun, July 31st 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

The last few days we fished we caught mainly dolphin and then we had a little motor trouble. We blew a turbo on Friday but we got it fixed on Saturday and we are back ready to go again. Light northeast breeze today-should get the marlins going!

Marlins!!!

Wed, July 20th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Marlin fishing has been really good the last several days and it's only July!!! Yesterday we went and caught 4 whites along with several dolphin. Here's a great shot of Lawrence Smith with his 1st white marlin! Then he went on to catch 3 more-pretty good day.

Every day is different

Mon, July 11th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

It's amazing how much the ocean changes every day. Last week we went one day and caught nothing but dolphin (a limit), then the next day we go and only catch 3 tuna-can't find a dolphin anywhere. Then, we go a third day and there's plenty of tuna and dolphin. You just never know from one day to the next.

Fantastic day of fishing!

Thu, June 30th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

A fantastic day on the water today. It was calm for a change but more importantly our fish box was full early and we were back to the dock by noon! We set out and as soon as one line was in the water we were covered up with dolphin. We got our limit very quickly and then concentrated on tuna. It wasn't long before all our rods were bent over and we quickly caught our limit of yellowfins. What a day!

Fishing report

Mon, June 27th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

A few more tuna for us the last two days. We had about 6 or 7 yellowfins each day along with a limit of dolphin. Saturday was really rough but Sunday was much better. I like it calm!!!

More Dolphin

Thu, June 23rd 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

More dolphin on Wednesday-a limit again plus one yellowfin tuna. We had a couple of bigeye bites but they didn't like the hook too much.

Meat Fishing

Tue, June 21st 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

It's pretty much been all meat fishing the last several days. Mostly limits of dolphin but today we also had 6 really nice yellowfins. I'm happy that the dolphin are here in force but I really want to see some more marlin!!!

Great day

Thu, June 16th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Really good fishing for us yesterday. We released 4 whites, one blue and caught about a dozen gaffers. We also saw 3 more whites and another blue. That's about as good as it gets.

Gaffers and Marlin!

Fri, June 10th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Really good gaffer dolphin fishing for us the last couple of days-all you wanted. Also, a white marlin or spearfish thrown in there as well. On Tuesday we caught another really nice blue marlin-at least 400 pounds-maybe 500. This is a picture of a spearfish-looks just like a white marlin except for a shorter bill.

Fishing report

Mon, June 6th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

On Friday we caught a small blue marlin and several gaffers-not the best day in the world but not the worst either. Then, another blue marlin for us on Saturday-a 500 pounder! Really pretty bite-he was going crazy on the teaser and then switched over to a pitch bait that Johnathan offered-text book. Lots of bigeyes caught yesterday-a few marlin as well.

Beautiful Sunrise

Mon, May 23rd 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

We had a reality check this weekend as fishing slowed down for us a little bit. Yesterday, we only caught a few tuna, a few dolphin and a white marlin. However, if even you don't catch a lot of fish, any day on the ocean can be beautiful-as demonstrated by this amazing sunrise.

Cool Picture

Fri, May 20th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

You never know what you are going to see when you go offshore. I just thought this was a cool shot of Bull Tolson on the "Sea Toy" running in with a huge cargo ship in the background.

More good fishing

Fri, May 20th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

I know this sounds like a broken record but the last two days of fishing have been really good to us. On Wednesday we caught about 4 tuna, 6 gaffers and 2 white marlin. Thursday brought us two bigeys-about 150 and 160 pounds-several gaffers and 500 pound blue marlin at the end of the day! Here is a good shot of the marlin right before he was released.

Blue Marlin!

Wed, May 18th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Really good fishing the last two days. On Monday we caught and released about a 400 pound blue marlin and 30 gaffers. The blue put on a great show for us too-jumping all over the water. Yesterday, we couldn't make a wrong turn and loaded the box with yellowfins. Fishing is really heating up for us now-I love it!!!!

Weekend report

Mon, May 16th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Tom's daughter got married this weekend so we had Scott Williams running the boat for us and he did a great job. Saturday was a little slow for us-only a few bites and a few dolphin but Sunday proved to be a great day for dolphin fishing. We ended up with about 30 nice gaffers. Thanks again to Scott for filling in for Tom. He's back out on the water today.

Fantastic fishing!

Sat, May 14th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

It was a little rough on Friday but man was it worth it. We ended up with 16 yellowfins and 13 gaffers-really good fishing. I hope it holds up. Tom's oldest daughter, Kristen, is getting married today so it's a great day of celebration for his family. The wedding is at 5:00 so not much longer!

Great fishing!

Mon, May 2nd 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

A great day of fishing on Saturday. We just couldn't make a wrong turn and ended up with a limit of nice yellowfins. I wish every day was like that. On Sunday there were great catches of bigeyes and yellowfins. Fishing is heating up!!!

Action!

Thu, April 21st 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Yesterday started off a little slow for us but it ended up with lots of action! In the last hour or so we ended up with with 5 yellowfins, a dophin and a 75 pound wahoo. We had a lot more tuna bites but we couldn't manage to hold on to them. It was plenty rough but our charter did great-especially the kids. We've got this Saturday open if anyone wants to go. The last several days has seen pretty decent fishing.

Offshore report

Wed, April 20th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Every day on the water is different. On Monday we went and to be honest it was a little slow with a little bit of excitement. We only caught a couple of tunas but we also caught 100 pound mako shark that wreaked havoc in the cockpit! Tuesday was a different day and we caught over 30 dolphin! Also, late in the day, I kept seeing water splashing way off the bow and thought it was porpoises. However, as I got closer I realized it was bluefins! Miles and miles of bluefins jumping out of the water! We hooked two immediately on 50's and they took us to the knot and broke off. We then put out an 80 and as soon as the bait hit the water we hooked up again. He was too big to keep so we let him go and called it a day. Can't wait to get back out there!

Back on the Water

Mon, April 11th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

We got to fishing again yesterday and had pretty decent luck. About a dozen yellowfins and a few blackfins. Not bad for early April-hopefully a good sign of things to come.

Bluefins!

Mon, March 28th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

We went offshore on Saturday for the first time this year and were rewarded with 5 bluefin. We kept the first one which was around 180 pounds and then released the rest. The last one we released was pushing 400 pounds!! Yellowfins were caught by the Hatteras fleet fishing just a little south of us so it's a great time to go fishing.

Time to go Fishing!

Fri, March 25th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

It's that time of year again! We just got out of the boatyard and are ready for another season of fantastic fishing out of Oregon Inlet. Right now there is great bluefin tuna fishing-the only problem is there are also killer whales that are sometimes eating the tuna before the angler can get his fish to the boat! Unbelievable site. Give us a call-it's time to go fishing!

The rock are still here!!!

Mon, February 28th 2011 - Inshore from Oregon Inlet

It's the end of February and the rock are still here! Both Saturday and Sunday saw unbelievable fishing with all you wanted both days. The fish on Saturday were a nicer class of fish (we had two 48 pounders) but we did all light tackle on Sunday and that was as good as it gets.

World Class!

Mon, January 31st 2011 - Inshore from Oregon Inlet

This may sound like a broken recored, but rock fishing is as good as it gets right now. We fished Friday, Saturday and Sunday and everyday it was world class. A really good showing of fish-the best season we've had in 4 or 5 years. We still have lots of dates open in February and the fishing seems to only be getting better!

Weekend report

Mon, January 24th 2011 - Inshore from Oregon Inlet

We tried to go on Saturday but it was really rough. We were only out there a couple of hours and didn't make it very far. Sunday was much better even though it was very cold. We had to run a good ways north but it was worth it-lots of rock.

World Class

Mon, January 17th 2011 - Inshore from Oregon Inlet

Fantastic rock fishing continues. We've been three days in a row this weekend and we've had all you wanted every day. We haven't had this good of a season in 4 or 5 years-it's just like it used to be. We have plenty of days open in February-it's time to get in on this world class action!

Fantastic Fishing!

Fri, January 7th 2011 - Inshore from Oregon Inlet

We've been fishing three times this week and everytime we have caught our limit. Tuesday and Thursday it took us a little while but today it was all you wanted. We went up to Duck first but then ended up catching all our fish 6 miles from the inlet. A boat beside us caught a 64 pounder today-a new state record-which beats the 63 pounder that was caught on Wednesday! Lots of big fish around.

Great Fishing!

Mon, January 3rd 2011 - Inshore from Oregon Inlet

Rock fishing continues to be really good. We had great fishing all weekend except for Saturday afternoon. Not sure what happened except the fish disappeared for a little while. Friday and Saturday morning were great but the afternoon just shut off. Then on Sunday it was fantastic again-all big fish up to 45 pounds!

Lots of Rock!

Fri, December 31st 2010 - Inshore from Oregon Inlet

It took us a little while to find the fish yesterday but when we did it was great fishing. Lots of rock-most of them around 20 pounds but we had one pushing 40. Great fishing-and the weather looks nice for the next several days.

Rock!!!

Thu, December 23rd 2010 - Inshore from Oregon Inlet

The rock are here in full force!!! It looks like we are going to have a great season this year-it's been several years since we've had that. Yesterday, there were lots of rock caught north of the inlet-as close as the light house-and we actually caught rock about 7 miles SOUTH of the inlet!!! We've got several days open the week after Christmas so give us a call. It's time to go!

Rock, Bluefins

Mon, December 13th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

There are lots of choices this time of year. Great news in that the rock have shown up!!! We haven't been yet but there have been several reports of nice catches north of the inlet. There has also been a good showing of bluefin tuna offshore and of course the yellowfins are still here. It's a great time of year to go if the weather will cooperate-that's our biggest enemy now.

Good Fishing

Mon, December 6th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Really good fishing on Saturday-a limit of yellowfins. It was a little rough but well worth it. It appears that the next few days will be too rough to go but later in the week looks ok if you want to go.

Fishing report

Wed, November 24th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

We've been offshore a couple of times over the last week or so. One day brought really good blackfin tuna fishing but on Monday we had a nice catch of yellowfins. The yellowfins seem to be here one day and then gone the next-you never know how your day is going to turn out until you go. I just wish they would get here and stay.

Yellowfins!

Fri, November 5th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

The last two days have seen great yellowfin fishing. Boats were back at the docks by lunch yesterday with their boxes full! The weather doesn't look good for the weekend but next week looks nice if anyone wants to go.

Update

Mon, November 1st 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

I haven't had many posts lately but unfortunately, there hasn't been much to talk about. We've only been fishing a few days and the fishing has been ok but not great. We're still waiting for the yellowfins to show up but the blackfins are still around. We had a good report from the commercial guys last week on the yellowfins so maybe they are headed our way.

Blackfins are Hungry!

Tue, October 19th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

The blackfins were really thick yesterday. We filled the box early and called it a day. If you want to do some light tackle fishing this is a great opportunity.

Action!

Mon, October 18th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

The blackfins are biting pretty good right now-what they lack in size they are making up for in numbers. All we need is for the yellowfins to show up and we will be set. Tom fished yesterday and caught plenty of blackfins. He's back out there today and then has the rest of the week off until Saturday. Give us a call if you want to go.

Weekend report

Mon, October 11th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Fishing slowed down for us a little on Friday but we still managed to catch several yellowfins. Saturday, the fishihg picked up and we had lots of action. I think we ended up with 30 blackfins, a few yellowfins, a wahoo and a sailfish! That's a rod going off almost all day-lots of fun!

Back out on the water!

Fri, October 8th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

The weather has been awful lately but Tom finally made it back out yesterday. It appears the marlin are gone so it's time to switch gears and focus on tuna. The yellowfins haven't really shown up yet but there were plenty of blackfins yesterday. I think Tom caught over 25 and they kept 18. He's back out there today and I'll post a report later tonight.

Friday’s report

Mon, September 27th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Tom felt pretty good on Friday-it got a little rough on the way home but he made out ok. He saw plenty of fish too. 16 whites came in the baits and they managed to relase 5. They just had some bad luck-they were hooking them but had a hard time holding on to them. Anyway, an all around pretty succesful day on the water. The weather looks a little iffy the first part of this week so it will probably be the end of the week before Tom makes it back out.

Big news!

Fri, September 24th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Big news! Tom went fishing for the first time yesterday and is back on the water today. Yesterday, we went fun fishing on a friends boat and Tom felt pretty good. We caught 8 whites and saw about 14. Pretty good action. Today, Tom is back on "The Hooker" with a charter-I'll let you know how they did.

We still have good fishing

Mon, September 13th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Marlin fishing slowed down for a day or two but then on Saturday it picked back up. We went 5 for 10 and lost two just a couple of feet from the leader, so all in all, a pretty good day. Here's a good shot of a good friend, Tim Farless, who went out last week.

White marlins!!!

Thu, September 9th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

White marlin fishing continues to be really good but not crazy like it was for a few days. Yesterday we caught 8 plus some very nice gaffers and today we caught 6 plus a few bailers. I'll take that any day of the week.

Unbelievable white marlin fishing

Tue, September 7th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

White marlin fishing is off the charts right now. Yesterday was the best day for the fleet going out of Oregon Inlet ever. Over 150 white marlin were released-and that's only with a very few boats of the charter fleet fishing. "The Hooker" had around 20 bites and managed to catch 8 plus about 25 nice dolphin-gaffers and bailers. At one point we had a double header of whites on and you could see around 50 dolphin plus more marlin swimming behind the boat. Pretty cool.

Marlin Fishing

Thu, September 2nd 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

The last few days have seen some incredible white marlin fishing a little north of us. We've had pretty good fishing as well but up off Ocean City it has been going off! Some boats have caught over 40 fish in a day! Here's a shot of white just before he was released on Tuesday. We went 2 for 4 that day. Not sure how the hurricane will effect the fishing-we'll just have to wait and see. It could push down the fish that are north of us.

Hurricane Earl

Thu, September 2nd 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Here's a shot of "The Hooker" hauled up in the boatyard in anticipation of Hurricane Earl. Just about all the boats are on dry land right now, but we are hoping it won't be too bad. We should be back in the water on Saturday.

Great marlin fishing

Sat, August 28th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

We ended up fishing on Friday which was a great thing-an absolutely beautiful day on the water. My neighbors booked the boat and allowed me to tag along-thank you very much. Marlin fishing has really picked up the last several days with many boats releasing up to 8 per day. We saw plenty yesterday but our percentage wasn't it's best-we released 3 whites and caught 30 or 40 dolphin.

Saturday’s fising

Mon, August 23rd 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Marlin fishing was a little slower for the guys on Saturday-They went 1 for 3 on whites but made up for it with a limit of nice dolphin. Right now we don't have another trip until Saturday so unless we get booked it will be a little quite this week.

Wednesday’s report

Thu, August 19th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Fishing is really consistent right now-that doesn't happen all the time. Yesterday, Scott and Gregg caught 4 whites plus around 30 dolphin. We are off today and tomorrow and have several open dates next week if anyone wants to go. Tom continues to get better-he's walking more and more every day.

Same as Yesterday

Wed, August 18th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

This report is going to sound just like yesterday's. Lots of dolphin and 3 white marlin. Marlin fishing is heating up-several of the boats had 4 or 5 yesterday.

Good fishing

Tue, August 17th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

A pretty good day on the water for the guys yesterday. Another 40 to 50 dolphin plus 3 white marlin! Plenty of meat and good marlin action-perfect.

Sunday’s Fishing

Mon, August 16th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Scott was back on the water on Sunday and caught about 45 dolphin. A couple of whites came after him but they weren't very hungry and Scott said he never got a shot at them. Also, Tom came home from the hospital on Sunday and is resting comfortably. He has even been up and walking some today.

Tom’s Surgery and PC Tourney

Sat, August 14th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

l'm Brian, Tom's partner, and I'll be posting while Tom is recouperating. His surgery went well yesterday and hopefully he'll be home in a few days. Thanks for everyone's thought's and prayers . We did not catch a fish yesterday in the last day of the Pirate's Cove Tournament so that was a bummer. Also, our tuna did not hold up so we were shut out of the money-maybe next year.

Day 2

Thu, August 12th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Kind of a slow day for us today in the second day of the Pirate's Cove Tournament. Scott and his crew only caught one sail today to give them a total of 3 fish for the week. The leading boat has 9 or 10 so there is some work to be done tomorrow. I go in surgery tomorrow at 12:30-ready to get this behind me.

Pirate’s Cove Tournament

Wed, August 11th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Scott ran the boat for the Alice Kelly tournament and ended up 1 for 3 on whites. I think the winning boat had 5. He fished the first day of the Pirate's Cove Tournament yesterday and caught one white, a sail and a 61 pound yellowfin. The leading boat has 7 and then a few boats have 3 or 4 so we are not too far out of the lead. Also, the tuna is in second place right now. Scott took his lay day today and then will fsh Thursday and Friday to finish up. I'll let you know.

Back Troubles

Wed, August 11th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

My back has been giving me trouble for a year or two now and I've been on borrowed time for a while. Last week, it finally got to where I couldn't take it any more and I'm having surgery this Friday. Scott Williams, a great guy and captain, is running the boat while I"m out of commission which should be for about 6 weeks. I'll try to do what the doctor tells me so I can be back out of the water ASAP-I'm really going to miss it. I'll still update the fishing reports though.

Great fishing!

Thu, August 5th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Fishing is about as good as it gets right now. Yesterday we went 5 for 7 on the whites, caught around 30 dolphin plus several nice size yellowfins. The Pirate's Cove tournament is next week so I hope the marlin stay around.

More marlin!

Tue, August 3rd 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Another good day on the water today. We were 4 out of 7 on the whites, caught our limit of dolphin and one 60 pound yellowfin tuna. It's hard to believe but we are open this Saturday if anybody wants to go.

My favorite time of year!

Tue, August 3rd 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

I love this time of year-it's when the marlin start biting! Yesterday we went 6 for 10 on the whites, caught about 20 dolphin and one really nice yellowfin tuna. We hooked 4 tunas but they were all on our small rigs and we were only able to land 1. I'll take that day any time. Action! I like it.

Wedding Day!

Mon, August 2nd 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

We took this past weekend off-I had a little something going on. My youngest daughter, Kelly, got married! Everything turned out very nice and she and her husband, Andy, are now enjoying their honeymoon in the Bahamas. My other daughter, Kristen, gets married next spring. Busy times around the Krauss house. It's hard to believe they are both old enough to be married-time goes by quick-enjoy it while you can.

Marlin fishing

Thu, July 29th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

On Wednesday we kind of switched gears a little bit and went marlin fishing. We were rewarded with about a 250 pound blue marlin on light tackle that put on quite a show. He jumped all over the ocean-really pretty. We also fought another blue marlin during the day but lost him about 20 feet from the leader! We also had a white marlin in the spread that wouldn't eat plus we put about 20 dolphin in the box. Pretty good day.

Tuna and dolphin

Wed, July 28th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

On Monday it was all yellowfin tuna for us. Just like on Saturday, they were really nice ones. We ended up with 9 and that was all we needed to fill the box. On Tuesday the whole ocean had changed and the tuna were gone. However, the dolphin had taken their place and we loaded the box with them. It's crazy how quickly the fishing changes.

Mixed bag

Sun, July 25th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

It's still rough but the fishing was pretty good for us yesterday. It started off slow but we had a good afternoon bite. We ended up with a sail (went one for two), around 15 dolphin and 6 really nice yellowfin tuna. Those six tuna almost filled up the whole fish box-I'll take that every day!

Catching up

Wed, July 21st 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

It's been pretty rough lately but we've made it out a few times. A couple of days were somewhat slow for us-around 10 dolphin and one white marlin-but we've also had some great action. On Sunday, we saw 14 sailfish! That's world class. We also had a limit of dolphin and had about 5 wahoo bites-that's a lot of action! I wish every day could be like that.

Blue marlin!

Tue, July 13th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

We were back on the water yesterday and pretty decent action. It was a little slow at first but then picked up as the day went on. We ended up with about 25 nice gaffers, one tuna (we got slammed by the tunas but it was all on our small riggs and we broke most of them off) and a blue marlin! He was only about 200 pounds but he put on a good show-pretty to watch.

Another good day

Fri, July 9th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Another good day yesterday-Thursday-about 25 dolphin and we caught one sail and missed another. A little rough but a pretty good day.

Take a kid fishing!

Thu, July 8th 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

We went fishing on Monday and the dolphin were everywhere so there was no problem catching our limit. We also caught a sailfish and a white marlin-pretty good day. Wednesday we had several kids on the boat, Alex White, Eason Clark and Noah Wynn. I really like when the kids go-nothing better than to take a kid fishing. We started out with the dolphin and put about 35 in the boat-then we caught a sailfish-Noah got to reel him in and finished off with a few tuna. A great day on the water!

The last two days

Fri, July 2nd 2010 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Wednesday was a little slow for us. It was rough, rainy and not many fish. We had a really nice family from Texas on board and I was disapointed we couldn't have had a better day for them. We did manage to snag one white marlin and a gaffer dolphin so each kid got to reel in a fish. Thursday, things picked up for us and our take was a limit of dolphin, a few tuna and a sailfish.
