Fish We Catch:


In the sound, targeted species you'll most likely encounter will be puppy drum, speckled trout, and bluefish. Spanish mackerel and flounder can also be caught. There are many other varieties that are landed as well, all depending on conditions and methods of fishing. For example sheeepshead can be caught around pilings in the sound.

Thoughts of Earl

Tue, August 31st 2010 - Inshore from Oregon Inlet, Hatteras Sound, Hatteras Surf

Many folks are sure talking about Hurricane Earl, but that hasn't stopped them from fishing. Numerous sheepshead were landed in the sound today on one of our in-house charters. There are also puppy drum and puffer fish being caught sound side as well. The inlet is still seeing numerous flounder, mainly throw back size but with a few keepers. Anglers in the surf are reporting back that blues and puppy drum are being caught. Some sea mullet have been landed as well.

Anglers in the surf are reporting catches of numerous blues and sea mullet in the tri-village area.

Still hearing reports of puppy drum in the sound caught on cut bait and popping corks. Many of these drum are being caught near the shoreline. There have also been reports of puppy drum caught at he inlet on the north side. Pompano have been reported in the surf in Salvo.

The surf is a bit choppy, but anglers are still giving it ago. Blues, puppy drum, flounder, and sea mullet are around Oregon Inlet.

2-3lb blues on the cat walk of Oregon Inlet bridge. Drum all along the beaches and the sound.

hi all, the drum are in NOW!!!!!! on the sound side rite behind the shop and the north side of rodanthe channel by the old barge. they are up to 40" and a lot of slots so come and git ya some! good luck! ryan

North end of Oregon Inlet is now open

Wed, August 25th 2010 - Hatteras Surf

The north end of Oregon Inlet is now accessible to ORVs and pedestrians. With the very nice weather we're having and bait fish reportedly everywhere to be seen, the fishing should no doubt heat up. Reports of puppy drum are being caught along the beaches from Oregon Inlet to Frisco. Nice sized flounder are being caught amongst the smaller ones as well. Still seems to be a pick through though.

A few anglers are trying to get a little fishing in between rain squalls. We have heard of a few spot, sea mullet, and blues in the surf.

Reports of decent size and numbers of spanish mackerel around ramp 38. Word is that hey are coming in right before sundown. Puppy drum have been reported south of ramp 23. Sea mullet are still abundant as well.

Plenty of blues were caught on the Rodanthe pier. 40lb cobia was landed on the pier as well. Avon pier reported a 56lb king mackerel and a 100lb tarpon.

Weekend Fishing Report

Sat, August 21st 2010 - Hatteras Sound, Hatteras Piers, Hatteras Surf, Ocracoke Surf

Puppy drum have been reported in the surf and close to shore in the sound. Sheepshead are still hanging around the pilings in the sound. Decent numbers of pompano are to be found in the surf off Hatteras and Ocracoke. Still seeing blues, spanish, spot croaker, mullet, and numerous small flounder in the surf, on the pier, and at the inlet.

Word from the surf near ramp 23 is numerous blues and sea mullet. The Rodanthe pier reported spots, croaker, blues and spanish mackerel.

Beach and sound fishing

Wed, August 18th 2010 - Hatteras Sound, Hatteras Surf

Fisherman at the hook last night caught decent numbers of flounder, some small, some keepers. An angler at ramp 23 reported a 27" puppy drum. There were still reports of croaker, spot, and sea mullet as well. Charter guys and kayakers in the sound reported speckled trout, sheepshead, small flounder, blues, seamullet, and puppy drum.

The Rodanthe pier has reported triggerfish, spadefish, croakers, and flounder. No word from the surf as of yet.

Mon, August 16th 2010 - Hatteras Piers, Hatteras Surf

We got word that a big school off tarpon were spotted 600 yards off the shore somewhere around the point by kayak fisherman. A bit too far to cast out to, but if you fish by kayak it might be something to consider. Other wise, anglers have been catching a few puppy drum in the surf. The pier this morning has been producing blues and small flounder.

The Sunday Fishing Report

Sun, August 15th 2010 - Hatteras Piers, Hatteras Surf

The pier has reported numerous bluefish, along with croakers, sea mullet, and spot. Ramp 23 is open, but no word from anyone that has ventured out there as of yet. Just heard of decent sized puppy drum being caught in the surf today. Some anglers are giving it a go for a late evening fishing session.

The Rodanthe pier is reporting blues, croaker, sea mullet, spot, and flounder for the folks enjoying the nice weather for today. No word from the surf as of yet. First king mackerel caught on the pier this morning. No word on size just yet.

Spot and sea mullet are abundant off the surf. Decent numbers of pompano around the Buxton area, ramp 43.

The report for today in the tri-village area are catches of spot and blues on the pier. Not much word for the surf as of yet. Just got word of sea mullet in decent numbers of the surf in Rodanthe. Charters in the sound have reported numerous flounder, under 15 inches unfortunately, and sheepshead.

The surf is seeing spot, but there are also sharks and rays being caught in the surf. The sound has been seeing specks and puppy drum. The wind is out of the SW at 5-10mph.
